Background
This gene encodes a type II transmembrane glycoprotein that is the highly polymorphic Kell blood group antigen. The encoded protein contains sequence and structural similarity to members of a family of zinc metalloglycoproteins with neutral endopeptidase activity. Kell is a zinc endopeptidase. Kell is expressed primarily in the erythroid tissues, and in a near-equal amount in testis, with weaker expression in a large number of other tissues.
