Background
TGF-B receptor III (TGF-BRIII; betaglycan) is an ubiquitously expressed transmembrane proteoglycan TGF-B co-receptor that regulates TGF-B signalling by increasing the binding of TGF-B to the subunit II or TGF-B receptor. (Note: The TGF-B receptor III is a co-receptor of TGF-B receptor, composed of subunit I and II; TGF-B receptor III increases the binding of TGF-B to the subunit II. In this way it can regulate the signaling.) TGF-B receptor III expression is lost in many human breast and prostate cancers and correlates with the resistance to the tumor suppressor effects of TGF-B. The overexpression of TGF-B receptor III in breast cancer cells suppresses their tumorigenicity in an animal model.
